A Child Again

“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.”
(Mark 9:37)

A Child Again

I wonder why sometimes I can’t wonder.
Is this some kind of blunder?
Have I perhaps in growing old
Forgotten how a child will hold
…a daisy
…a pebble
…some grass or ring?

In fact they grasp and hold just anything!
And they wonder, wish and ask you why?
…the green of grass
…the blue of sky
…the soft of pillows
…the hard of rocks
…the sweet of candy
…the lime of chalks…why, why, why?
On and on they see and wonder
Near or far they hear and wonder.
Please help me wonder once again.
Then age won’t creep up and cripple me.
Only if I can wonder amazed at what I hear and see
Will I live again the child in me.

For Reflection and Sharing:

  1. What are the characteristics of child-likeness that Jesus asks us to imitate?
  2. Why did Jesus have to remind the twelve of the need to be child-like?
  3. What makes a person jealous or too ambitious?
  4. How are dependence and humility related?
  5. Does fear ever stop you from questioning?

Dear Juliemarie;
One of the tings I am slowly recovering IS the joy of wonder and trust. I love riding on buses and subways and watch kids in storllers; grin at them and have them wave. I love watching small children stop to look at a caterpillar- just as I did when small…. i love the trust they give to their parents and I try to be as ingenuous, carefree and trusting as wee children when I sit and allow myself to muse on Jesus and all He said and did for us all. I have a LONG way to go, but I DO know that God loves ALL of us totally and utterly so I don’t need to tense up and worry beacuse I am not totally trusting and open..yet! Thank you for your poem- it opned much for me! Love and prayers Anitra

Anitra, I used to have a card on my desk as a reminder. It read: “Why worry when you can pray.” You have given me a new insight: “Why worry when you can watch and enjoy children at play.” Thank you.
