A Voice—the Word

in Feasts Celebrated on Sunday

He [Zechariah] asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name, and all were amazed.”   (Luke 1: 63)

A Prayer Poem by Sr. Juliemarie McDonald, SND
for the Feast of the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
June 24, 2012

Once meeting in their mother’s wombs,
Now meeting at the waters of the Jordan.

Voice and Word
Plunging in the waters of a new life,
New obscurity,
New mission.

John, crying in the wilderness,
Jesus, crying over Jerusalem,
Still crying for repentance and change.

John showing it is alright to question the God-man.
Jesus ready to preach the “Good News” of truth.

John ready to acquiesce to the spoken needs of the other,
Jesus ready to live a humble and hidden life.

John fading into the dusk of evening, mission completed.
Jesus rising like the morning sun, mission begun.

 For Reflection and Sharing:

  1.  In my relationships with others, do I bow to others needs or force my opinions on them?
  2. How attuned am I to God’s will and plan for me?
  3. Like Jesus, do I speak the truth with clarity? If not, why not?

Short and pithy! Lovely contrasts!! My parents met on Sankt Hans Fest- feast of st. John the Baptist in 1927 in Denmark. They became engaged after 3 visits as Dad was coming To Canada in Sept. They had hoped to marry on the 24th in 1929 but afterdisembaking from ship in ontreal- no trains were running to get Mum out to Saskatchewan on time! So they were married June 27th! AND I am here because of a cuff link! My Dad was working on his brother’s farm in Denmark for the Spring and summer of ’27. My uncle wanted my Dad to go to the big celebration for St. John Baptist- Dad was relectant but agreed- then he broke one the cufflinks he was putting in his shirt ( cufflinks to a picnic!) – so wasn’t going to go. My Uncle said to him”You can fix anything!” Dad did; went, met Mum and the rest is history!! Love Anitra

Anitra, the feast of John the Baptist holds many happy memories for you. My prayer for you is like John you have finished a mission. Like Jesus you look forward to a new mission that Jesus has planned for you from all eternity.
