in Lent

A Prayer Poem by Sr. Juliemarie McDonald for Ash Wednesday
February 22, 2012

Ashes on our foreheads,
Same old, same old!
Give up! Candy, coke, cigarettes,
Drinking, swearing, criticizing
Same old, same old!
Praying, fasting, almsgiving

Ashes on our foreheads,
Fortitude fails us,
Back to the same old habits.
Satan whispers,
“What’s the use?”

Enter the Spirit of God,
gifting Jesus with Gospel  truths.

I pray you believe and ponder the Good News.
I pray you listen to the lessons of the Gospel.
I pray you hear God say once again,
“This is my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”(Mk 1:11b)
I pray you hear Jesus’ mother, Mary say,
“Do whatever he tells you.” (Jn 2:5b)
Finally, during this season of Lent,
I pray you hunger as Jesus did and say,
“My food is to do the will of the one who sent me….”( Jn 4:34)
Amen.

What does Ash Wednesday mean for you this year?

thanks Sr Julie
It’s ” the same old” but has the beauty of ritual and the grace to unite our efforts with with all of God’s saving grace this day. What a great way to say it!
