in Lent

A Prayer Poem by Sr. Juliemarie McDonald for First Sunday of Lent-Cycle B
February 26, 2012

“The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert…” (Mark 1:12)

Forty days in the desert is a long time.
What did you find in the desert mine?
What were you searching for as you fasted and prayed?

No food, no water, just stones, sand and rock,
And dark nights with starlight and air that was chill.
What were you searching for as you fasted and prayed?

You are baptized and gone from your home.
What will you do, where will you go?
Desert discerning is no easy task.

Demons roamed the desert with you,
Placing before you false loves to lure you.
Choose power, prestige, and pleasure.
“Take the easy way out, follow the crowd.”

Fasting and prayer gave Jesus the fortitude
To choose the difficult road to glory.
Jesus chose the will of the Father, the path of humility, charity and justice.
Courage gained Jesus the crown.
