in Ordinary Time

“This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” (John 6:29)

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time–Cycle B
August 5, 2012

How does one obtain gifts from God?
Is it by signs and wonders?

“Give us a sign,” the unconvinced crowd challenged.
Jesus gave them:
…no sign,
…no new work to accomplish,
…no code of laws.
Jesus challenged them for complete commitment
to him in faith.
“This is the work of God, that you believe in the one
he sent.” (John 6:29)

How does one obtain gifts from God?

Our Father is a gifting God:
…the gift of Manna in the desert,
…the gift of the multiplication of the loaves,
…the gift of the Bread of Eternal life!

God still signs his signature on the daily gifts he gives us.

For Reflection and Sharing:

  1. How does one obtain the gifts from God?
  2. What are some of the “daily gifts” God bestows on you?
  3. Why is faith in Jesus a requisite for God’s works and wonders?

Dear Sister Juliemarie,

This is what I need to remember: the Client that comes to me is “the one sent,” that no one comes into my life by chance. He, she is the one sent from the gifting God. It is a holy encounter.
Thanks for the reminder.

Mary, I like the way you applied the poem. It’s my hope that other readers can also make this application.
