“He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land if Israel.”
(Matthew 2:21)

Babe of Bethlehem

Babe of Bethlehem,
…Family of David,
…Son of a pregnant teenager,
…Joseph, engaged to Mary, considers divorce,
…Called to Bethlehem for a census,
…Born in a cave—no room in the inn.
What a way to treat a King!

Babe of Bethlehem,
…Innocent children slaughtered,
…Family escaped to Egypt,
…Refugees in a strange land,
…Dream of Joseph—return trip to Nazareth.
What good can come out of Nazareth?

Babe of Bethlehem,
…Jobless Joseph, foster-father of Jesus,
…Mary, Mother of God,
…Jesus, obedient Son of Man.
What makes this family holy?

For Reflection and Sharing:

  1. What insights did Matthew open to you in this gospel?
  2. Why did Jesus become incarnate?
  3. What virtues are tested in the events surrounding Jesus’ birth?
  4. What makes Jesus, Mary and Joseph a holy family?
  5. How do you define holy?
  6. Mention a holy family you have met in your journey of faith?

This short poem covers so much! Many people in distress can identify with Mary or Joseph. The story continues in our own day.

This is my hope. May it bring encouragement. No one is alone. God with Us – Emmanuel.
