Masks and Blindfolds: A Letter to the Divine Physician

Dear Divine Physician of Souls, Minds and Bodies,

Thank you for removing my masks and blindfolds. At first, the light was blinding and I groped for sunglasses. Why it took so long for me to reach this point in my journey, like all my other whys, will come later. But you know how my mind works; I needed to know, “What finally removed those scales from my eyes?” I think you would have diagnosed it as “Spiritual Blindness.”
It is a dangerous disease because ordinary physicians recognize physical problems, not spiritual ones. I am understanding more and more, with your grace, the healthy importance of balance and harmony of our souls, minds and bodies.
My hunch is that I was seeing with only my mind and judging from that angle. But you, Divine Physician, see with your heart and love with compassion. I think I’ve found more than a few of my blind spots. So, during the rest of this Lenten journey, I need to correct these blind spots which keep me from clearly seeing, people and events with a 20/20 vision of the heart.
Praise and thank you, Divine Physician. You are healing my spiritual blindness.  I know I am not totally cured, for with my “spiritual ears” I hear you asking, “Is this lens better or worst?” just as my optometrist asks me at my yearly eye examination.

Much love and gratitude,
Your Spiritually Blind Patient

For Reflection and Sharing:

  1. Regarding your spiritual blindness, what is your line of vision: 20/20, near-sighted, far-sighted? Explain why.
  2. What are the causes of our blurry, cataract spiritual blindness?
  3. How do spiritually blind people regain their sight?
  4. What are some of the dangerous lens we see through in our culture?
  5. Regarding John 9:1-41 – Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind, what are some of your insights from this passage?
  6. How does the blind man progress from darkness to light?
  7. How do the Pharisees  fall into even more severe darkness?
