“What then should we do?” (Lk 3: 10)

Dear John’s Advice Column

Dear John,

What then should we do during this Advent season?

Dear People of God,

I would say it is important to repent by:

  1. Having no anxiety,
  2. Sharing with the needy,
  3. Stop seeking more. Shutter the clutter.
  4. Practice no extortion.
  5. Stop falsely accusing others.
  6. Be content with your finances.
  7. Be not discouraged.
  8. And don’t fear failure or misfortune.

                  Oh! And

  1. Cry out to the Lord with gladness.
  2. Rejoice in the Lord always.
  3. Sing praise to the Lord.
  4. Be glad and exult in the Lord.
  5. Let God rejoice over you.
  6. Be confident and courageous.
  7. Give thanks to the Lord for his goodness.
  8. Proclaim the good news.

                 Oh! And

Don’t be discouraged by the list. God is not like Santa Clause. The Merciful Lord won’t ask, “Have been naughty or nice?” He will only give you a hug and say, “I am so glad you came back to me.”

For Reflection and Sharing:

  1. Suppose in our age, living our cultures you would ask John, “What should we do?’’ What would John the Baptist advise?
  2. In what way does the Baptism of John differ from the Baptism of Jesus?
  3. Who in your spiritual journey has been your John the Baptist?
  4. Which one of the negative actions is most difficult for you to transform?
  5. Which one of the positive actions is most difficult for you to cultivate?
  6. What will I do in the next week and a half to be more ready to greet the Babe of Bethlehem?
  7. What gift or gifts can Jesus expect from you?
