Service: Lips or Hearts?

Jesus quotes Isaiah to describe the church leaders of his time. W.J. Bryan quotes the idea this way: “Eloquent speech is not from lip to ear, but rather from heart to heart.”

On which side of service do you stand? Lips or Heart?

            Lip Service

  • Self-centered
  • External Laws
  • Tradition
  • Human Laws over God’s Laws
  • Ritual Purity
  • False Pretense

            Heart Service

  • God-Centered
  • Transparent
  • God’s Law of Love
  • Compassion
  • Forgiveness
  • Openness to the Holy Spirit

Lord, deliver me from hypocrisy. Let me not imprison you laws, which I have not thought about to discover their true meaning. Rather let me free you to do your will in me. Let me be a channel of your love and compassion. May I forgive not only those who hurt me, but let me free myself of guilt feelings of failures and sins long forgiven by You, God of Love. Center me in You. May I not be known as one who pays you lip service. May my service to You and to others be birthed from love. Amen.

For Reflection and Sharing:

1. What challenges you as you reflect upon the Gospel this Sunday?
2. Do I give too much credence to externals in my daily life?
3. What seems to be the characteristics of one who is overly law conscious?
4. How is God asking you let go of meaningless service?
5. Why is it difficult to break the habit of hypocrisy?
6. Where do you see hypocrisy very alive in your culture?
