Transfiguration Means Change

Second Sunday of Lent–Cycle B
March 1, 2015

“And his clothes became dazzling white…”
(Mark 9:3)

Transfiguration Means Change

It is time to:
Renew, renovate, refurbish, modernize, streamline,
bring up to date, revamp, recast, revise, rehash,
refresh, reinvigorate, rejuvenate, restore, resurrect,

Old: is known like the back of your hand,
is as comfortable as a worn shoe,
is as antique as great grandma’s rocking chair,
is stale as moldy bread.
is moth-eaten as a wool sweater,
is as out-of-date as last year’s calendar,
is as obsolete as last year’s computer,
is gray as thunderstorm clouds.
is moss-grown as the old oak tree,
is as time-worn as a yellow-paged book,
is as old as a patch on an old pair of jeans,
is as forgotten as yesterday’s news.

New times call for transfigurations.

New: is as unknown as the far reaches of the universe,
is as uncomfortable as a humid, sticky day,
is as innovated as the latest hybrid car,
is bright as a sunny 4th of July.
is as succulent as a Georgia peach,
is spic and span as a clean window,
is untried as a new recipe,
is modern as an iPod.
is futuristic as a time machine,
is untrodden as a new fallen snow,
is advanced as a math major,
is 21st century as the latest innovator.

Transfiguration is a call to challenge the old you and to risk the new.
You are called to be prophetic witnesses, consciously aware of the signs of our times.
May your clothes become dazzling white. Amen.

For Reflection and Sharing:

  1. What stands out in the Gospel that you want to ponder more deeply?
  2. How has God’s glory been revealed to you?
  3. How can you, this Lent, listen more faithfully to God’s Word?
  4. When do you find choosing the more comfortable old way of doing things?

Aha! Thank you so much for helping to clarify the Transfiguration! I have puzzled over the purpose of this event in Christ’s life for years! I am sure I have more pondering to do but this was a “Godsend” for me!

I love you!

Val, I so glad the poem was a Godsend. I hope all my poetry is just this-a Godsend and Spirit filled message. Jm
