in Lent

Third Sunday of Lent — Cycle C

February 28, 2016

“Sir, leave it for this year, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it;” (LK 13: 8a)

Burning Bushes and Dying Trees

Burning Bushes

With bare feet approach the living God of light.

“I know what you are suffering; I hear your complaints, I am your rescuer.”

“What is your name?”

“I AM.”

In the beginning,

Am now, and

Will forever be “I AM.”

“Tell all people that I AM the Lord who is kind and merciful.

I pardon you, heal you, redeem you and love you unconditionally.

I crown you with kindness and compassion and mercy.

But whoever thinks they are secure, be careful not to fall.”

Dying Trees

“Fig trees are we.

We do not bear fruit.

We are dying.

We thought we were secure.”

Be like the compassionate gardener.

Be ready to bring the tree back to life.

Ask the owner for a “do over”, even it be only a year.

“Don’t we do some bargaining in our prayer life?”

Like the compassionate gardener,

We must put a bit more muscle into our gardening to keep our promise.

Dig into the roots of bad habits; soften the sod of hardened heart.

Fertilize the least attended ground circle ling around the tree.

Live a life afire with love, faith and hope; humbly repent; this Lent change death into life.

For Reflection and Sharing:

  1. How is your life like a fig tree?
  2. Who owns the tree?
  3. What kind of fruit is God asking you to produce?
  4. Who is the gardener?
  5. Which sin do you want to get rid of this Lent?
  6. What is your plan to have the sin remove from your life?
