Our Father

in Ordinary Time

17th Sunday of Ordinary Time — Cycle C

“Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples…When you pray, say…”

Our Father

Notice; Jesus says “Our” Father, not “my” Father.
Blessed Baptism that made all of us children of God.

Who art in heaven

King of Kings, Lord of Lords of the heavenly Kingdom.
A kingdom where love and peace reign.

Hallowed be Thy name

Praise, glory and honor to the King of heaven and earth.
Worthy of adulation, esteem and worship.

Thy Kingdom come on earth, Thy will be done as it is in heaven.

God’s will, not our will. When good things happen in life, oh yes!
When bad things happen, Why me O Lord? War vs Peace seen so often on earth.

Give us this day, our daily bread

We believe you are a good and provident God. We don’t need to have a stash for hard times. “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not more of value than they?” (Mt 6:26)

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Whoa! Read that line again! Now, examine your conscience. How are you doing?
Dig deeper! Find out why you can’t forgive. Ask, and our heavenly Spirit will answer.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen

God has gifted us with the knowledge of right and wrong. This gift of safety is written in our hearts. He will guide us so that we do not sin, unless we don’t care if we sin or not. Because we have free will, God will deliver us from evil if we ask him.

For Reflection and Sharing:

  1. What new insight have you gained by reflecting deeply on the Our Father?
  2. Why is it that we humans like to hoard?
  3. Why does hoarding darken our belief in a provident God?
  4. Why can you say the Our Father is more than just a prayer, but a way of life?
  5. Why is it so hard to forgive those who hurt us?
  6. What will others see in you, if you begin to LIVE the Our Father?
