“When the devil had finished every temptation,

he departed from him for a time.” (Lk 4:13)

The Desert of Daily Temptations

Jesus spent 40 days in the desert, tempted by the ancient serpent:

-Puffing up of Ego.

Jesus took on humanity with all its limitations, like us in everything

but sin. He, too, experienced the desert of daily temptations!

Tracing our journey to the promised land of God’s eternal kingdom,

we discover the stages of our growth in strength against Satan.

Remember our own times of struggling against:

-Puffing up of Ego?

Others may remember your “terrible twos,”

You recall those terrible teens.

Power and prestige took over your adult years,

trying to climb the ladder of success.

Do you recall raising a family?

-a slow decline of ego as you raised children,

-now impatient wells up in you,

-perhaps mistrust in your partner occurs,

Now you have reached the formidable forties!

-a wander-lust begins to lure you,

-the teen-age macho-man returns to haunt you,

-egoism again reflects a wrinkled face, maybe I need a face lift!

Retiring time brings:

-graying hair, emptiness and perhaps death of a loved one,

-quiet time you never had—what to do?

-restless hearts possess their own temptations.

Wisdom grows.

-pondering life’s temptations and victories,

-confession of the “could haves, would haves, if “onlys,”

-realizing Jesus also struggled with us on our journey.

“When the devil had finished every temptation,

he departed for a time. (Lk 4:13)

For Reflection and Sharing:

  1. Where am I? What stage of growth is part of my journey now?
  2. What kind of retorts do I have for Satan?
  3. What seems to be luring you away from the path to the heavenly Kingdom?
  4. How do you plan to deal with your temptations as Lent brings you to Easter?
