in Ordinary Time

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time–Cycle A
October 22, 2017

Flattery got them nowhere.
Though the Pharisees honored Jesus with their words,
their hearts were closed to his words of wisdom.

You are a truthful man.
You teach truth.
You are not concerned about other’s opinions.
You find no meaning in the status-quo.

Beware of false flattery.
Like Jesus, discern righteous hypocrisy.
See those who are out to get something for themselves. Flattery is their tool.
They are smooth talkers.
Beware of false flattery.

Fake flattery may entrap your gullible ego.
Rather, give to the Lord true glory and honor.
“Sing to the Lord, all you lands. Tell his glory among the nations, among all peoples, his wondrous deeds.” (Psalms 96: 7b)

For Reflection and Sharing:

  1. What lies behind flattery?
  2. What are the traits of a hypocrite?
  3. Name some of the entrapments of our century.
  4. What makes a person gullible?
  5. When do you pray for discernment?
  6. Do you pretend to be someone you’re not?
  7. When do you give glory and honor to God?
