in Ordinary Time

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time–Cycle B
July 12, 2018

“Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two…”
(Mark 6:7a)

Jesus has two messages for us this week:
Simple Lifestyle

You are sent one. “Take nothing for the journey except two things: sandals and a walking stick.” If Jesus were sending us out on mission today, imagine what baggage we might carry.

Bag 1:   Underwear, socks for a cold night, shaving cream, razor, make-up kit, toothbrush, tooth paste, mouth wash, lipstick.

Bag 2:   Hardware: iPad, watch, email addresses, book to read if things get dull, snacks, bottles of energy drinks, etc. etc. etc.! (Add your own!)

Today in modern society, a simple lifestyle is not so simple. Two is not enough. Yet, Jesus calls us and sends us on mission journeys. What instructions does He give us today?

Two by Two

We know from experience that is hard to go it alone.
We are not islands. Like sheep we like a flock of others around us. We are not lone wolves.

We are companions on our journey.
We are God-loving people, who want to spread God’s Word and build His Kingdom on earth.

Do you hear God’s call? Are you listening? Are you willing to be sent?
Get yourself a companion, listen to God’s instructions, and go set the world on fire with the love of God and His goodness.

For Reflection and Sharing:

  1. Why would asking for repentance be a necessary part of evangelization?
  2. What will speak much louder than your words to the people?
  3. Has your parish ever offered a missionary trip to the parishioners?
  4. How do the people in America seem to evangelize?
  5. Why is just giving to the poor, or feeding the poor, not complete evangelization?
